WhatsApp Reminder Bot: Free Options, Limits, and When You Don't Need One (2026)

Reminders By the Aivi team October 19, 2026 12 min read

A rent reminder on the 1st. The call you promised your dad. The invoice a client swore they'd pay by Friday. You want WhatsApp to just remind you — and a WhatsApp reminder bot sounds like the answer. Here's what a bot actually is in 2026, which flavours exist, what the free ones leave out, where every bot stops — and when you don't need one at all.

Is there a WhatsApp reminder bot?

  • Yes. A reminder bot in WhatsApp is a separate contact you message like a person — "remind me Friday 6pm to pay rent" — and at that time it messages you back inside its own chat. Public bot services, task apps that ping you in WhatsApp, and self-hosted projects on GitHub all do this.
  • But a bot only knows what you type to it. The promise in your family group, the deadline a client wrote on Monday — none of it becomes a reminder until you retype it. Aivi is a separate app for iPhone and Android that works on top of your WhatsApp and Telegram chats: when a plan comes up, it offers a reminder — one tap. Not a bot in WhatsApp.

What a reminder bot in WhatsApp actually is

A reminder bot in WhatsApp is an account you talk to like a friend, except on the other end a program is listening. You open a chat, type what to remind you about and when, and at that time it writes you back. The reminder lands inside the bot's own chat — a notification, a line of text.

An ai whatsapp reminder service understands plain language — "ping me at 7 tomorrow about the dentist." Simpler bots ask for a fixed format. In a group, the bot has to be added as a participant, so every member can see it.

How a reminder bot in WhatsApp works

  1. You start a chat with the bot's phone number — usually by saving a contact and sending "hi."
  2. You message a reminder in a plain sentence or a template.
  3. The bot stores it on its servers.
  4. At the time you set, it sends you a WhatsApp message — a notification, a line of text.
A bot never looks into your other chats. It only knows what you type to it. The "don't forget the gift" line in your family group never reaches it.

The four flavours you'll meet

People lump anything that pings you on WhatsApp into one word — "bot." Four very different things hide under that word.

Personal reminder bots

A phone number you message directly. Works like a journal with alarms — your reminders live inside the bot's chat, nowhere else.

Task apps that ping you in WhatsApp

A reminder or to-do app with WhatsApp as one of its notification channels. The tasks live in the app; the ping arrives as a WhatsApp message.

Self-hosted bots (GitHub projects)

Open-source scripts you run on your own server. Many of them automate a personal number through WhatsApp Web — see the rules section below before you try.

Business reminders to customers

Companies send appointment, invoice or shipping reminders through the official WhatsApp Business Platform, from pre-approved templates. Not a personal to-do list for you.

Different jobs, different trade-offs. The first two are what most people mean by a whatsapp ai reminder bot. The third is for tinkerers. The fourth has nothing to do with your personal to-do list.

What about free bots?

Looking for a WhatsApp reminder bot free of charge? Free tiers exist — with limits. Most public bot services let you try for free; the catch is usually a cap on how many reminders you can keep or on which features you get. Check the limits before you rely on it for an invoice due date.

A self-hosted bot is "free" as in free software — you pay in a server and setup hours. Fine for a weekend project; a lot of ceremony for a nudge about the gym. Many WhatsApp AI reminder services are free to try and paid to keep, so treat "free" as "free to try" until you've read the limits.

Are WhatsApp bots allowed?

Bots are legal. The official road is the WhatsApp Business Platform — Meta's API for registered businesses.

One rule as of October 2026: on 15 January 2026, Meta stopped allowing "general-purpose" AI chatbots on the Business Platform — services where the AI itself is the product. That's why ChatGPT left WhatsApp (9to5Mac).

Task-specific bots — support, bookings, reminders — aren't the target of that ban. But what counts as "general-purpose" is Meta's call, case by case.

Unofficial scripts are the risky lane. Projects that automate a personal number through WhatsApp Web violate WhatsApp's terms, and the number can be banned. This is a platform-rules matter, not criminal law — if you need legal advice, ask a lawyer, not a blog.

Where every bot stops

  • It's a separate chat. You go to the bot's thread, like any other contact. Reminders don't show up in the chat they came from.
  • You retype everything. Every reminder has to be typed to the bot. The dentist you promised to call? Open the bot's chat, type it in.
  • It can't see your real chats. A bot has no window into your other conversations. Promises in a group, dates agreed with a client — invisible until you tell the bot.
  • Your reminders live on its servers. The service holds the list. Read its privacy page before you load it up with sensitive dates.

Do you actually need a bot?

Before you hunt for the perfect bot, two WhatsApp features already cover a lot of the ground:

  • WhatsApp's own "Remind me". Long-press a message, tap More… → Remind me, pick a time, and WhatsApp reminds you about that message later. Rolled out on iPhone from late 2025; on Android it was tested in beta during 2025 and may not be on your Android phone yet. If the option isn't there, update WhatsApp — features roll out gradually. Full walk-through: our step-by-step guide to WhatsApp's "Remind me".
  • Events in groups. Any group can host an Event — a plan with a date and time. WhatsApp reminds invitees before it starts; since January 2026 you can also set an early reminder for everyone invited. Great for "movie night, Friday 8pm." More in Calendar in WhatsApp.

Where those two still leave you stuck: things never said as a formal message or event — "I'll send it by Friday" tossed into a thread, a client agreeing to Thursday at 3, your sister asking you to pick up tickets. That's where a bot — or something a bit smarter than a bot — earns its keep.

Aivi: reminders from your chats, without the bot

Aivi is a WhatsApp reminder AI app for iPhone and Android that works on top of your WhatsApp and Telegram. You link WhatsApp yourself through its official Linked Devices feature — Aivi never asks for your WhatsApp password or SMS code.

From then on, when a chat contains a plan — a call, a meeting, a deadline, an "I'll send it by Friday" — Aivi offers to add it to your calendar or tasks with a reminder. One tap, and only if you say yes.

Importantly, Aivi is not a bot. It isn't a WhatsApp contact. It isn't added to your groups. It never writes in your chats — not a message, not a nudge, not a reply. It lives in its own app on your phone.

Reminders from your own chats

Family group, client thread, a message from your partner — when there's a plan in it, Aivi offers a reminder. No retyping into a separate chat.

One tap, you decide

Aivi suggests — "Add 'Call Anna' tomorrow 9am?" Accept it with one tap or let it go. Nothing is scheduled behind your back.

Calendar and tasks, built in

Aivi has its own calendar and task list — connect Google Calendar if you like. You can also ask in plain words: "remind me tomorrow at 9 to call Anna." Every morning, Aivi lays out your meetings and tasks.

Works in groups too

Aivi understands who said what in a group chat, including you. The group sees nothing — Aivi never posts into your chats.

You stay in control

Aivi never asks for your WhatsApp password or SMS code. Your messenger passwords never reach our servers. We keep no archive of your messages; your chats stay on your phone. Unlink any time.

How do you politely remind someone on WhatsApp?

A good reminder is short, specific, and gives an easy way out. Pick a line that fits the relationship.

  • Soft nudge: "Hi Alex — gentle nudge on the invoice we talked about last week. Any blockers on your side?"
  • With a time anchor: "Hey, just a quick reminder we're on for Thursday at 3. Still works for you?"
  • For a friend: "Not forgetting Saturday — anything you want me to bring?"

Aivi can draft one of these for you — in your tone, in the other person's language. You read, you edit, you send. Aivi never sends anything without you.

How to start with Aivi

Three steps once, then it just hums along.

  1. Install Aivi from the App Store or Google Play, sign in with Apple or Google.
  2. Link WhatsApp yourself through WhatsApp's official Linked Devices feature. Aivi never asks for your WhatsApp password or SMS code.

Is a reminder bot safe?

Depends on the flavour. Four tools, four different profiles:

  • Public bot services. Your reminders live on the service's servers. Read its privacy page before you load it with sensitive dates.
  • Task apps with WhatsApp notifications. Same question — where do the tasks live, who can read them.
  • Self-hosted bots that automate your personal number. Breaks WhatsApp's terms; the number can be banned.
  • Aivi. You link WhatsApp yourself via Linked Devices — Aivi never asks for your WhatsApp password or SMS code. Your messenger passwords never reach our servers. We keep no archive of your messages; your chats stay on your phone. Aivi never sends anything without you. Unlink any time (WhatsApp → Linked Devices, Telegram → Devices).
Rule of thumb: read the privacy page before you trust any tool with a legal deadline or a large payment.

Reminder bot vs "Remind me" vs Aivi

Three tools, three jobs. Where you set the reminder, who has to retype what, whether it sees your real chats, and whether it fires equally on both phones.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a WhatsApp reminder bot?

Yes. A reminder bot is a separate WhatsApp contact you message — "remind me Friday 6pm to pay rent" — and at that time it messages you back in its own chat. Public services, task apps and self-hosted projects all do this. The limit: a bot only knows what you type to it, not what's in your other chats.

Can you set a reminder in WhatsApp?

Yes — WhatsApp has a built-in Remind me option. Long-press a message, tap More… → Remind me, pick a time. It's rolled out on iPhone from late 2025; on Android it was tested in beta during 2025 and may not be on your phone yet. If you don't see it, update WhatsApp. Full steps: our guide to WhatsApp's "Remind me".

Are WhatsApp bots illegal?

No — bots themselves are legal. The official way is the WhatsApp Business Platform. Since 15 January 2026, Meta's terms no longer allow "general-purpose" AI chatbots on it (that's why ChatGPT left WhatsApp). Unofficial scripts that automate a personal number violate WhatsApp's terms and can get the number banned — a platform-rules matter, not criminal law.

What happened to the WhatsApp reminder feature?

It's rolling out gradually. Remind me reached iPhone from late 2025; on Android it was in beta during 2025. If the option isn't there yet, update WhatsApp — new features reach phones in stages. Step-by-step guide.

Is there a free WhatsApp reminder bot?

Yes — several public services offer a free tier, usually with a cap on how many reminders you can keep or which features you get. Check the limits before you trust it with a rent date. A self-hosted bot is free as software, but you pay in a server and setup time.

How do you politely remind someone of something on WhatsApp?

Keep it short, specific, and give an easy out. "Gentle nudge on the invoice — any blockers on your side?" works better than "please pay now." Aivi can draft a follow-up in your tone and in the other person's language — you read, you edit, you send.

Does Aivi work in group chats?

Yes. Aivi understands who said what in a group, including you. The group never sees Aivi — it's not a contact, it's not added, it doesn't post. Any suggestion (a reminder, an event, a task) is shown only to you.

Is Aivi free?

Aivi is free to download and try. Ongoing use needs a subscription — $9.99 a month on the standard plan in the US; prices vary by country, and you always see the price in the app before you pay.
