How to Set Birthday Reminders on WhatsApp Without Missing Them

Reminders By the Aivi team October 27, 2026 11 min read

As of October 2026, WhatsApp's own birthday reminder feature has not been rolled out to the stable app. Three ways work today — WhatsApp Events, third-party reminder apps, and AI assistants that notice birthdays in your chats. The birthday reminder WhatsApp is building reads dates from your phone's address book. Aivi reads them from the chats themselves — where most birthdays actually get mentioned — and offers to save them to your calendar in one tap.

How to set a birthday reminder on WhatsApp today — the short answer

  • WhatsApp doesn't do it yet. As of October 2026, WhatsApp's own birthday reminder feature has not been rolled out to the stable app — it has been spotted in Android and iOS beta builds through 2026, but the planned version will pull dates from your phone's address book, not your chats.
  • Three options that actually work. Create a WhatsApp Event in the chat (one-off, no yearly repeat). Use a third-party reminder app or applet (you type the name and date in by hand). Or use Aivi — an assistant that notices birthdays as they come up in your WhatsApp and Telegram chats and offers to save each one to your calendar, yearly, tied to that contact.

Does WhatsApp Have Built-in Birthday Reminders?

Not yet in the stable app. The feature has been spotted in WhatsApp's own beta builds, but WhatsApp has not announced a public release date.

WABetaInfo has spotted an in-development birthday-reminders tool in both Android and iOS beta builds through 2026 — including WhatsApp beta for Android around version 2.26.27.3 and WhatsApp beta for iOS around 26.38.10.18. WhatsApp has not announced a public release date.

The feature is being built into a new Contacts tab, with a cake emoji and a 'Birthday today' label on the day, and it pulls dates from your phone's address book — not from your WhatsApp conversations.

If you do not already have a contact's birthday saved in your phone's Contacts app, the WhatsApp feature won't know about it. For most friends, that field is empty.

Short version: when WhatsApp's own birthday reminder ships, it will only know the birthdays you (or your friends) have already typed into the phone's address book. The ones mentioned in chats stay invisible to it.

There's one thing WhatsApp does ship today, but it isn't a birthday reminder as such. WhatsApp has Events in groups and communities — and, on many phones now, in one-to-one chats too. You create each event by hand: title, date, time, place, call link.

As of October 2026 the feature is official in groups and communities; in private chats it is still rolling out, so it may or may not be on your phone yet. Everyone invited can reply whether they're going, and WhatsApp sends a reminder before it starts.

Three Ways to Keep Birthdays from Slipping Through WhatsApp Chats

Three practical paths, honest about what each one does and what it won't.

A. WhatsApp Events (built in, one-off)

You can create an Event titled 'Anna's birthday' with the date and an optional location or call link; participants get a reminder before it starts. Good for the gathering itself — the dinner, the call, the surprise brunch.

The catch: WhatsApp Events are created one event at a time; there is no built-in yearly recurrence, so for a birthday you would be creating a new event each year. If you also save it to your phone calendar, you can let the calendar handle the repeat.

B. Third-party reminder apps and automation applets

Third-party reminder apps and automation applets can store a birthday date and ping you in WhatsApp (or your phone) when the day comes. You enter the name and the date yourself; the app or applet does the rest.

Limits: you type the date in by hand, the reminder lives inside that other app, and anything mentioned in your WhatsApp conversations stays there until you re-enter it. If a birthday only ever came up in a chat, it never ends up in the reminder app.

C. An AI assistant that notices birthdays in your chats

The third path: an assistant that sits alongside your chats and spots a birthday when it comes up in the conversation itself — the message 'my birthday is March 12', a wave of 'happy birthday!' in a group — and offers to save the date, so you don't type anything in by hand. That's where Aivi comes in.

How Aivi Notices Birthdays in Your Chats

Aivi is a separate app for iPhone and Android that works alongside your WhatsApp and Telegram. You link WhatsApp yourself through its official Linked Devices feature; for Telegram you sign in with the official sign-in — the code comes from Telegram itself. Aivi never asks for your WhatsApp password or SMS code.

Aivi notices important dates mentioned in your WhatsApp and Telegram chats — a birthday, a loved one's birthday, a wedding, an anniversary, a company birthday, a memorial — and offers to add them to your calendar. One tap, you decide. Aivi never saves the date silently.

The date is added as a yearly entry in your calendar, tied to that contact — not to the group, not to a random to-do list. In group chats, Aivi recognises whose date it is (for example, several people wishing Anna a happy birthday → it offers to save Anna's birthday) and nothing is posted into the group.

On the day of the event — and the day before — when you open that chat, Aivi offers a short message you can send to wish them. You send it; Aivi never sends anything without you. The event itself shows up in your calendar on the day.

Explicit ask works too. You can also tell Aivi the name and the date — 'remind me about Anna's birthday on May 3' — and it goes into your calendar.

Aivi (only you see this)Add Mum's birthday — April 12 to your calendar? Yearly, tied to Mum.
In a family group chat: Aivi notices Mum's date and offers to save it to the calendar. Only you see this card — nothing is posted into the group.

Noticed in your chats

Aivi spots when a birthday is mentioned in a WhatsApp or Telegram conversation and offers to save it.

Yearly, tied to the contact

The date goes into your calendar as a yearly entry, linked to the person — not to the group, not to a loose to-do.

On the day and the day before

Open that chat — Aivi offers a short message you can send to wish them. You send it, Aivi never sends anything without you.

No passwords, no archive

Linked through WhatsApp's official Linked Devices feature. Your messenger passwords never reach our servers; your chats stay on your phone.

  • We keep no archive of your messages — your chats stay on your phone.

  • Unlink anytime (WhatsApp → Linked Devices, Telegram → Devices).

Setting It Up Step-by-Step

Three real steps the first time, then the rest happens as you chat.

  1. Download Aivi free from the App Store or Google Play; sign in with Apple or Google.
  2. Link WhatsApp yourself through WhatsApp's official Linked Devices feature. For Telegram, sign in with the official sign-in — the code comes from Telegram itself. Aivi never asks for your WhatsApp password or SMS code.
  3. Chat as usual when a birthday comes up — someone's own, a loved one's, a wave of 'happy birthday!' in a group — Aivi offers to add it to your calendar. One tap. Your call.
  4. Date saved yearly the birthday goes into your calendar as a yearly event, tied to that contact. You can connect Google Calendar if you want it to show up there too.
  5. On the day when you open that chat on the day (and the day before), Aivi offers a short message you can send to wish them. You send it with one tap.

Common Pitfalls

A few things worth knowing up front, so none of this bites you in June.

  • WhatsApp Events don't repeat yearly. Create a new one each year, or let your phone calendar handle the recurrence.
  • The WhatsApp beta reminder reads your address book, not your chats. When it ships, it will only know birthdays saved in your phone's Contacts app — and for most friends, that field is empty.
  • A date mentioned without a year is read as the next upcoming one. 'My birthday is March 12' with no year attached rolls to the next March 12.
  • Time zones matter. If the person is far from you, the 'day' can shift — set the event's time zone, or stick to a date-only entry.

Short version. WhatsApp Events are great for the gathering itself, not for a recurring birthday. Reminder apps work if you'll faithfully type every date in by hand. Aivi picks up the ones that actually get mentioned in chats and quietly offers to save each one — the gap the other two leave open.

Frequently asked questions

Can you set birthday reminders on WhatsApp?

Not through WhatsApp itself yet — the feature is in beta on Android and iOS as of October 2026 and has not been rolled out publicly. Today you have three options: create a one-off WhatsApp Event for the gathering, use a third-party reminder app where you type the date in by hand, or use an AI assistant like Aivi that notices birthdays in your WhatsApp and Telegram chats and offers to save each one to your calendar — yearly, tied to that contact. See also How to Set a Reminder on WhatsApp.

Does WhatsApp notify when it's someone's birthday?

Not in the stable app yet. A birthday reminder feature has been spotted in WhatsApp Android and iOS beta builds through 2026 — a new Contacts tab with a cake emoji and a 'Birthday today' label on the day — but WhatsApp hasn't rolled it out publicly, and the planned version reads from your phone's address book, not from your chats.

How does Aivi know a birthday?

From the conversation itself. When a birthday is mentioned — 'my birthday is March 12', a wave of 'happy birthday!' messages in a group — Aivi notices and offers to add the date to your calendar. One tap, you decide; nothing is saved silently. In a group chat, Aivi recognises whose birthday it is and ties the yearly entry to that person. You can also tell Aivi explicitly — 'remind me about Anna's birthday on May 3' — and it goes into your calendar.

How much does Aivi cost?

$9.99 a month in the US, prices vary by country, and you always see the price in the app before you pay. Aivi is free to download and try.

Does Aivi read my chats to find birthdays?

Aivi works alongside your chats on your phone and notices dates as they come up in conversations — a birthday, a wedding, an anniversary — and offers to save them to your calendar. Your chats stay on your phone, we keep no archive of your messages, and Aivi never sends anything without you. You unlink any time in WhatsApp → Linked Devices or Telegram → Devices.

How to set automatically birthday wishes on WhatsApp?

WhatsApp doesn't send automatic birthday wishes — there's no built-in 'auto-greet' feature, and bots that message people on their birthday aren't a thing WhatsApp supports. The closest reliable path: let Aivi notice the birthday in the chat and save it. On the day (and the day before), when you open that chat, Aivi offers a short message you can send to wish them. You send it with one tap. Aivi never sends anything without you.
